Background & Origin
Thatch served as the fourth division commander of the Whitebeard Pirates, and also as the crew's head chef, carefully preparing meals to suit his ageing captain's health.
Warm and well-liked, he was a treasured member of the family Whitebeard had built.
Story & Growth
Thatch's life ended in tragedy. He found a rare and coveted Devil Fruit — the Yami Yami no Mi — and for it he was murdered by his own crewmate, Marshall D. Teach.
That killing was the act that drove Blackbeard from the Whitebeard Pirates, and Thatch's death became the crime that Ace set out to avenge — a pursuit that would lead, in time, to the Marineford war.

Thatch was a capable fighter and a senior officer of an Emperor's crew, holding command of an entire division.
His greatest renown, though, was as a chef — the cook trusted to keep the Strongest Man in the World fed and well.
