Roronoa Zoro

Zoro trained from childhood at a dojo in Shimotsuki Village, where his only equal was Kuina, the dojo master's daughter, who beat him in every single duel they fought. The two made a pact that one of them would one day become the world's greatest swordsman.

When Kuina died the next day in a sudden accident, Zoro asked for her sword, Wado Ichimonji, and carried both her blade and her dream forward as his own. He left home as a wandering swordsman and made his name as the feared bounty hunter 'Pirate Hunter' Zoro. His path crossed Luffy's when he was bound and starving at a Marine base awaiting execution — Luffy freed him, and Zoro pledged himself as the first member of the Straw Hat crew.

Zoro's ambition met its measure early, at the Baratie, where the world's greatest swordsman Dracule Mihawk defeated him with almost no effort. Rather than break, Zoro swore to Luffy that he would never lose again until the day he surpassed Mihawk.

That resolve was tested at Thriller Bark, where he silently absorbed all of the punishment meant for his captain — telling the lone witness simply that 'nothing happened'. When the crew was scattered for two years, Zoro swallowed his pride and asked Mihawk himself for training, leaving the island with a scar across his left eye and far greater power.

In Wano Country he claimed the cursed legendary blade Enma, once wielded by Kozuki Oden, and awakened a flicker of Conqueror's Haki — confirming his place among the strongest fighters of his generation.

Zoro fights with Santoryu, the Three-Sword Style of his own invention — a katana in each hand and a third clenched between his teeth — though he is equally lethal with one or two blades. His current swords are Wado Ichimonji, the cursed Sandai Kitetsu, and the black blade Enma.

He has mastered both Armament and Observation Haki, and at Wano awakened Conqueror's Haki, which he can coat onto his swords to cut through almost anything. Famously durable, his heavily scarred body is a record of the punishment he has endured to protect his crew.
