Background & Origin

Shanks first sailed as an apprentice aboard the ship of Gol D. Roger, the Pirate King himself, serving on the only crew ever to conquer the Grand Line. After Roger's death he struck out on his own and founded the Red Hair Pirates.

Years later his crew spent a season in the quiet Foosha Village, where Shanks met a small boy named Luffy. When Luffy was dragged into the sea by a Sea King, Shanks saved him at the cost of his own arm — and entrusted the boy with his treasured straw hat, telling him to return it once he had become a great pirate.

Story & Growth

Shanks rose to become one of the Four Emperors, pirates whose power rivals that of the World Government itself. Unlike many of his peers he is known less for cruelty than for the sheer weight his word carries across the seas.

At the height of the Marineford war, with the battlefield in chaos, Shanks arrived and brought the fighting to a halt by his presence alone — sparing countless lives and quietly declaring that the coming age would belong to the next generation.

Abilities & Powers

Shanks carries no Devil Fruit; his strength lies entirely in mastery. He is a supreme swordsman, able to clash on equal terms with the greatest blades in the world.

He is one of the few to wield all three colours of Haki, and his Conqueror's Haki is so refined that he can overwhelm opponents — and even split the skies — without drawing his sword.
