Background & Origin

Luffy grew up in Foosha Village in the East Blue, raised under the long shadow of his grandfather, the Marine hero Monkey D. Garp. As a boy he idolised the visiting pirate Red-Haired Shanks, whose crew wintered in his village.

It was there that Luffy accidentally ate the Gomu Gomu no Mi, a Devil Fruit that turned his entire body to rubber. When Shanks lost an arm saving him from a Sea King, the pirate entrusted Luffy with his straw hat and made him promise to return it once he had become a great pirate in his own right. Luffy spent the rest of his childhood alongside his sworn brothers Ace and Sabo, steeling himself for the day he would set sail.

Story & Growth

Setting out alone at seventeen, Luffy built his crew one member at a time across the East Blue — the swordsman Zoro, the navigator Nami, the sniper Usopp and the cook Sanji — before braving the Grand Line, where Chopper, Robin, Franky, Brook and Jinbe would join in turn.

His resolve was forged in loss. At the Summit War of Marineford he failed to save his brother Ace, a defeat that drove him to disband the crew for two years of brutal training under the Pirate King's former first mate, Silvers Rayleigh.

Returning to the New World a far stronger captain, Luffy toppled the Emperors' grip island by island, culminating in Wano Country, where he defeated the Emperor Kaido and awakened his Devil Fruit. He is now counted among the Four Emperors himself — one of the most powerful pirates alive, and a direct threat to the World Government.

Abilities & Powers

Luffy's Gomu Gomu no Mi was ultimately revealed to be a Mythical Zoan, the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika. In its base state it makes his body elastic, immune to blunt force and electricity; awakened as 'Gear 5', it grants him an almost cartoonish freedom to reshape himself and his surroundings.

He fights almost entirely with hand-to-hand combat, amplifying his rubber body through self-named techniques he calls 'Gears'. Luffy has also mastered all three colours of Haki — including the rare Conqueror's Haki, which he can refine to a coating on his strikes — making him as dangerous in willpower as he is in raw power.
