Background & Origin

Whitebeard rose from a hard, parentless childhood to become the most feared pirate of his age. In his youth he sailed with the legendary Rocks Pirates, and in time he became the only man the world ever considered a true equal of the Pirate King, Gol D. Roger.

Rather than chase the One Piece for himself, Whitebeard wanted only one thing he had never had: a family. He built the Whitebeard Pirates into a vast fleet of division commanders, every one of whom he called his son.

Story & Growth

For decades Whitebeard ruled the seas as an Emperor, his name alone enough to shield entire islands under his protection. That peace ended when his 'son' Portgas D. Ace was captured and sentenced to death.

Whitebeard led his entire force against the Marine headquarters at Marineford to save Ace. Though gravely wounded — and ultimately killed — he died on his feet, undefeated from the front, and with his final breath confirmed to the world that the One Piece was real.

Abilities & Powers

Whitebeard wielded the Gura Gura no Mi, the Tremor-Tremor Fruit, regarded as the most destructive Devil Fruit of all — able to crack the very air and raise earthquakes and tsunamis at will.

He had mastered all three forms of Haki, including a tremendous Conqueror's Haki, and fought with an enormous bisento. Even aged and ailing, he was acknowledged as the Strongest Man in the World.
