Portgas D. Ace was the second division commander of the Whitebeard Pirates and the sworn brother of Monkey D. Luffy — a fire-wielding pirate whose death at Marineford reshaped the world.

Background & Origin

Ace was the son of the Pirate King, Gol D. Roger, and Portgas D. Rouge — a heritage so dangerous that the world would have killed him for it had it been known. He was raised on Dawn Island, where he grew up alongside Luffy and Sabo, the three boys swearing an oath of brotherhood over cups of sake.

Setting out to sea, Ace founded his own crew, the Spade Pirates, determined to make a name that was truly his own and not his father's.

Story & Growth

Ace's path crossed Whitebeard's when he tried — and failed — to take the Emperor's head. Whitebeard took him in instead, and Ace rose to command the crew's second division, coming to love Whitebeard as the father he never had.

When he hunted down the traitor Blackbeard, Ace was defeated and handed to the Marines, who scheduled his public execution. The attempt to save him became the Marineford war — and there Ace died, shielding Luffy from a fatal blow with his own body.

Abilities & Powers

Ace ate the Mera Mera no Mi, a Logia-type Devil Fruit that let him create, control and transform into fire. He could blanket a battlefield in flame or strike with concentrated bursts of heat.

He had also trained in Haki, and as a division commander of an Emperor's crew he stood among the most powerful fighters of his time.
