Background & Origin

Garp built a legend across decades of Marine service, repeatedly clashing with Gol D. Roger and cornering the future Pirate King time and again. For his deeds the world named him a hero — yet he refused every promotion to admiral, content to remain a vice admiral.

His family, however, runs against everything the Marines stand for: his son is Dragon, leader of the Revolutionary Army, and his grandson is Luffy.

Story & Growth

After Roger's execution, Garp took in Roger's son, Ace, raising him alongside his own grandson Luffy in the hope that both boys would grow up to be Marines. Both became pirates instead.

Garp was present at the Marineford war, torn between his duty and his grandson. In his later years he stepped back from the front lines to train the next generation of Marines, including the rising young officer Koby.

Abilities & Powers

Garp's strength is the stuff of legend — he is famous for hurling cannonballs by hand with the force and accuracy of artillery fire.

Like Roger, he carries no Devil Fruit; his power rests entirely on monstrous physical might and a mastery of Haki built over a lifetime of battle.
