Mihawk holds the title the entire world acknowledges: the strongest swordsman alive. For years he held a place among the Seven Warlords of the Sea, though he answered to no one and lived as he pleased.

In his younger days he shared a famous rivalry with Shanks — their duels were said to echo across the Grand Line — until Shanks lost an arm and Mihawk's interest in their contest faded.

Mihawk first crossed the Straw Hats at the Baratie, where he crushed Zoro with almost no effort but recognised the young swordsman's potential and spared his life.

Years later, during the crew's separation, Mihawk took Zoro in and trained him personally on the island of Kuraigana — sharpening the very rival who one day intends to take his title. When the Warlord system was abolished, Mihawk joined Crocodile and Buggy in founding the Cross Guild.

Mihawk fights with Yoru, a colossal black-bladed sword — one of the world's twelve Supreme Grade blades — wielded with effortless, surgical precision.
